Balanced Scoring Leads to Road Win at Purdue Northwest

The Panthers snapped a four-game losing streak to the Pride and improved to 2-4 this season

HAMMOND, Ind. - The Davenport women's basketball team played their most complete game of the season on Saturday afternoon in a 76-67 win at Purdue Northwest to split the weekend series with the Pride. The win snapped a four-game losing streak to the Pride and improved the Panthers to 2-4 this season.

Emily Lange followed up her career-high 26 points yesterday by leading the team with 17 points on Saturday. She did not shoot as efficiently as Friday going 4-of-12 from the floor but she was aggressive getting to the basket and went 9-of-10 at the free throw line. Davenport had one of the best days in program history at the charity stripe going 31-of-33 as a team (93.9 percent). They were one make shy of the school record set against Madonna in 2013.

Toni Grace and Scout Nelson each scored 14 points and combined to go 9-of-9 at the line. Grace shot 5-of-11 from the floor and also had three rebounds and three steals. Nelson went 4-of-10 from the floor and also had five rebounds and two assists. Loni Sales also was in double figures for the first time in three games with 12 points and led the team with eight rebounds from her guard position.

Davenport did a good job of taking care of the ball with 12 turnovers (four below their season average). DU edged the Pride 14-3 in points off turnovers and did not allow easy baskets in transition. Kenzie Wilkinson scored eight points and tied the team lead with three steals in 28 minutes.

The Panthers really came through in the fourth quarter when the game was on the line. DU shot 60 percent from the floor and were 12-of-12 from the foul line. The game featured seven ties and nine lead changes. Purdue Northwest opened the game on a 7-0 run and trailed throughout the first quarter.

Davenport took their first lead at 23-22 on a free throw by Wilkinson at the 7:16 mark of the second quarter. Purdue Northwest opened up a 36-30 lead at the 1:54 mark and led 37-32 at halftime. The Panthers would regain the lead at 49-48 with 3:32 left in the third quarter on a pair of Wilkinson free throws.

The Pride regained the lead early in the fourth quarter at 52-51, but the Panthers surged ahead 59-54 with 5:44 to play on free throws by Taylor Opolka. After a 59-59 tie with 4:56 remaining, the Panthers did not trail again. Nelson knocked down a three which sparked a run that ended with DU ahead 76-66 late in the game before Mercedes Simmons split at the line for the Pride with four seconds to go.

Head Coach Rick Albro after the win, "Today was a great team effort. Great to see balanced scoring and steady rebounding. Our bench also provided some quality minutes and that will be a key to our success moving forward."

The Panthers will be back home on Tuesday at 5 PM when they host Grand Valley State. The Lakers are ranked fifth in Division II with a 5-1 record but lost on Friday for the first time against Parkside (68-64).
