HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. - The Davenport men's D1 ACHA hockey team traveled to New York state over the weekend for a two-game set against Stony Brook. The Panthers took care of business on Saturday with a 4-2 win over the Seawolves and the home team returned the favor with a 5-2 win on Sunday at The Rinx.
The Panthers did their most damage on Saturday during the second period with three goals. They also tacked on another in the third period. Stony Brook held a 41-35 edge in shots on goal. Each also scored once on the power play.
The big hero was
Robert McLaughlin with a natural hat trick and he also added an assist. He scored twice in the second period and had another goal in the third giving him five goals this season.
Kristers Klavins scored the first goal for DU at 2:54 of the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Klavins also assisted on all three of McLaughlin's goals.
Sebastien Doucet also had three assists, all coming on DU's second period tallies.
Alexander Rogers made the start in net for the Panthers and made 39 saves in the process.
The Seawolves got their revenge on Sunday and scored the first three goals of the game. Kyle Nestepny scored the team's first and third goals and Andrew Mancini sandwiched a goal in between. Nestepny scored at 4:56 of the first period, Mancini scored at 43 seconds of the second, and Nestepny again lit the lamp at 5:28 of the second period.
Zachary Currie scored just 25 seconds after Nestepny's second goal for his third of the season with assists by
Austin Thompson and
Logan Davis. Stony Brook answered at 11:24 of the second period as Filip Pomianek scored his second goal of the season.
Jonathan Dubbink tallied the other goal for DU at 8:55 of the third period from McLaughlin and Klavins. Charles Peck concluded the scoring for SBU at 12:39 of the third period for his third goal of the season.
Stony Brook held a 51-31 advantage in shots on goal and
Nathan Gauthier made 46 saves for the Panthers in net.
