Panthers dispose of pair of West Michigan foes

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The men's Division I ACHA Hockey program hit on all cylinders this weekend as they beat Calvin and Grand Valley State. The Panthers improved to 4-2 overall with the victories.

Calvin scored first on Saturday 1:17 into the game but the Panthers responded at 5:05 as Jonathan Dubbink had the unassisted goal. The Knights continued the pressure on offense and it paid off with two more first period goals for a 3-1 lead.

Davenport from there took control and scored the last four goals for the 5-3 win on Saturday. Three of those goals came in the second period. Noah Hippolyte-Smith scored on the power play at 6:16 from Nathan Nickelson. Austin Thompson tied the game at 3-3 from Zachary Currie at 17:52. Sebastien Doucet would then score the game-winning goal at 19:22 unassisted.

Nickelson added to the winning margin with an empty-net goal with 46 seconds left in the game from Dubbink. DU went 1-for-5 on the power play and Calvin scored their first two goals on the power play and ended 2-for-7. Alexander Rogers got the start in net and allowed three goals with 11 saves before being pulled for Nathan Gauthier. He made 15 saves over the next two periods to earn the win.

The Lakers and Panthers had not played on the ACHA Division I level since 2013. DU jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period. Currie started the scoring with assists from Dubbink and Thompson at 6:03. Hippolyte-Smith also scored at 15:52 from Currie and Thompson.

GVSU would shake off the first period and outscore the Panthers 4-1 to take a 4-3 lead heading into the third period. Kristers Klavins scored in the second period for DU at 14:08. The final period belonged to the home team as DU scored six times compared to one for the Lakers for the 9-5 final score. Currie erupted for two goals and added three assists in the period. Nickelson, Hippolyte-Smith, Klavins and Thompson also scored in the third period. Nickelson's goal was the only one that came on the power play.

Gauthier played all 60 minutes in goal for the Panthers and stopped 23 shots. The Panthers scored four goals in the first 3:32 of the third period to quickly erased any deficit.
