BERRY, Ga. - The ITA Cup was unchartered territory for
Juan-Louis van Antwerpen and
Jonathan Bulmer, but their experience playing doubles together showed as they battled with the best in the nation at Berry College over the past few days. The DU tandem played three doubles matches and picked up one win while the other two matches were hotly contested.
The opening match pitted van Antwerpen and Bulmer against the Asuza Pacific duo of Leyton Bohren and Miha Velicki on Thursday. Bohren at the end of last season teamed up with Jakob Schnaitter to form the No. 3 ranked doubles team in NCAA Division II. Bohren and his new partner Velicki picked up the 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win moving the Davenport guys into the consolation bracket.
On Friday, the opponents were familiar faces from Hillsdale in Sean Barstow and Brennan Cimpeanu. Bulmer and van Antwerpen defeated this grouping in the ITA Midwest finals to secure their spot in the ITA Cup. The result was once again a victory for the Panthers by scores of 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-8 in a hard-fought match.
On Saturday, the final match of the tournament saw Joaquin Bianchi and Gonzalo Fernandez Gil representing the University of Texas-Tyler. The UT-Tyler program in one of the best in the South and were ranked nationally No. 23 to end the 2020-21 season. The UT-Tyler duo took the first set 7-6 (7-4) but Bulmer and van Antwerpen rallied for a 6-3 win in the second set. In the super tiebreaker, Bianchi and Fernandez Gil pulled it out 10-5.
