Box Score HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Davenport football team made the long trip to Michigan Tech on Saturday for their conference opener and fourth straight road game. That lengthy time on the road coming to an end concluded with a 31-7 loss to the Huskies on their homecoming at Kearly Stadium.
The Huskies built a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter which was too much for the Panthers to overcome. Darius Willis hauled in a 48-yard touchdown pass from Will Ark at 10:47 of the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. William Marano carried from 15 yards for a score with 5:01 left in the first quarter to build a 14-0 lead. Ark kept it himself for a one-yard touchdown run with 11:12 left in the second quarter.
Davenport's scoring drive started at their own 23-yard line right after MTU's third touchdown.
Deondre Ford completed a 43-yard pass to
Amonte Phillips on the first play of the drive. Those two hooked up again on an eight-yard touchdown with 6:24 left in the quarter and cut the deficit to 21-7.
The Panthers got the ball back after a punt but could not build any momentum as Ford was sacked and fumbled on the first play of the drive at the DU 28-yard line. Ark then found Hunter Richards for a 33-yard touchdown with 2:58 left in the half for a 28-7 lead.
The Panthers in the third quarter had a promising drive which started at the 13:00 mark. The drive lasted 7:02 and covered 59 yards in 12 plays, but
Bryan Plegue's 38-yard field goal was blocked. Drew Wyble would conclude the scoring with a 19-yard field goal with 10:32 left in the game for the 31-7 final score.
Davenport had more first downs than Michigan Tech (18-14) but was hurt by five turnovers including two interceptions and three fumbles. DU also was whistled for 100 penalty yards. The total offense numbers were 345 to 243 in favor of the Panthers. Ford completed 17-of-30 passes for 232 yards.
Kyshawn Richards carried 13 times for 94 yards. Phillips caught eight passes for 119 yards.
Jalen Robinson led the defense with 12 tackles including a tackle for loss and pass breakup.
