Davenport football will travel to Midland, Mich. on Saturday for a 1:00 PM kickoff against the Northwood Timberwolves.
OPENING DRIVE
● The Panthers were looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season last Saturday but Wayne State got the best of them on the scoreboard 16-3.
Bryan Plegue opened the scoring with a field goal in the first quarter but the offense could not put together another scoring drive. Wayne State scored the final 16 points including two rushing touchdowns and a field goal sandwiched in between. DU had more first downs (20-14) and rushing yards (216-200) but were just 1-of-3 in the red zone scoring chances.
● These two teams have met on the gridiron three times with the Timberwolves winning two of those games. NU took the first two in the series and all three games have been decided by eight points or less. DU will be looking for their first win in Midland and it might be their last chance because Northwood will be moving to the G-MAC next season. Davenport won 21-14 on Nov. 9, 2019 in Caledonia. Haiden Majewski tossed three touchdown passes in that game including two to Keion Powers. The one-yard scoring pass with 12:29 left in the game proved to be the winning tally. DU had 304 total yards compared to 231 for Northwood. DU ran for 173 yards and limited the rushing attack of NU to 84 yards.
● Northwood brings a 1-5 record into the contest and will be looking for their first GLIAC victory after three losses so far. Those three losses however are against the top echelon of the conference in Ferris State (67-25), Grand Valley State (70-9), and Saginaw Valley State (31-13). Northwood is averaging 18.5 points per game and averaging 253 yards of offense. Cashual Goldsmith leads the team with 411 rushing yards and the next closest teammate has 61. He has 104 of the team's 227 carries this season. Erik Santiago leads the Timberwolves with 46 tackles and has four pass breakups.
DAVENPORT NOTEBOOK
● The Panthers eclipsed 1,000 team rushing yards for the season last week against Wayne State. Currently, they are averaging 3.92 yards per carry which is second best for a season behind the 2016 team averaging 3.99 yards per carry.
●
Bryan Plegue has been a very reliable placekicker since joining the squad. He has converted on all 10 of his extra point attempts and has made 8-of-12 field goals in his career. He only trails Chris Ahmed who had 12 field goals in his career. Earlier this season against Northern Michigan on Oct. 9 he tied his own school record with three field goals against the Wildcats.
●
Seth Acda led the team with 57 rushing yards against Wayne State. He currently ranks second at DU with 785 career rushing yards.
● Davenport will need to figure out their struggles in the fourth quarter if they are going to pick up some more wins this season. They do not have an offensive point in the fourth quarter this season.
●
Jalen Robinson is the team's season leader and current career leader in tackles. Robinson has 54 tackles in 2021 and 133 in his career through 28 games. He had nine tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss against Wayne State and had a season-high 13 tackles in the opener against Truman State.
● Sophomore
Kaleb Elam has emerged as a solid defender in the secondary. He recorded a career-high 13 tackles against Wayne State including five solo stops. Elam also recorded 10 tackles at nationally-ranked Ferris State back on Sept. 25. He currently ranks third on the team with 33 tackles this season.
● The DU defense has been able to knock the ball loose at a steady pace this season. They have forced eight fumbles which is tied for second most in a season and trails the 2018 team that forced 13 fumbles.
