Panthers battle into double overtime with Saginaw Valley State

The Cardinals played up a man for 65 minutes before ending the match 2-1

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team faced an uphill battle most of the day on Sunday against a formidable opponent. The Panthers headed into the match with a 5-0 GLIAC record and were looking to put some distance between them and Saginaw Valley State. The Cardinals entered at 3-2 in the league but got themselves back into the thick of things with a 2-1 double overtime win over the Panthers.

The match was well played and tightly contested as SVSU ended up with 23 shots (8 shots on goal) while Davenport had 19 shots (7 shots on goal). The ebb and flow swung in a big way in the 40th minute when Eoin Broughan got his second yellow card of the match and DU was left to play with 10 men.

The Panthers played their hearts out and managed to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard until the 81st minute. Alex Gloshen pushed through two defenders and played a nice lead pass to Brady Walker. Walker did the rest with a streak to the goal and a shot from 10 yards lower left for his sixth of the season and a 1-0 lead for the visitors.

Davenport would not go away and showed resiliency by tying the match in the 87th minute. Justice Sikkema continued his scoring streak with his sixth goal of the season. Daire O'Riordan and Matt Whelan each had an assist as the ball bounced between the two and went to a cutting Sikkema who slid and connected with his right foot from around 14 yards.

The Cardinals had three shots in the first overtime as Davenport was trying to hang on for a point in the standings. A bad clearing attempt led to a corner kick on the far side of the field. It was lifted over the pile of players to the outside of the near 18-yard boundary. Robbie Bruce quickly kicked it high and back into the box in front and Anta Berkeley headed it home for his first goal of the season in the 106th minute.
