CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport football team were dealt a blow during pregame when
Isaac Van Dyke was injured and couldn't make a start at quarterback. In the end, the outcome went to the visiting Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State 24-3. Van Dyke helped lead the team to a win last week at Northwood and with other injuries lingering the team went to
Jake Jensen who is the fourth Panther quarterback to make a start this season.
The Panthers took a 3-0 lead on a school-record 45-yard field goal by
Bryan Plegue at the 3:06 mark of the first quarter. The defense was also playing really well as they forced the Cardinals into punts on their first four possessions in which they gained just 21 yards.
After that point, SVSU began to figure out a few things on offense and scored 17 points on their next three drives. Connor Luksic booted a 48-yard field goal at 10:47 of the second quarter to tie it up. Davenport went three-and-out and the Cardinals hit a big play on the third play of the drive. Colby Newburg tossed a 55-yard touchdown pass to Casey Williams for the 10-3 lead with 7:47 left in the quarter.
Jensen was intercepted on the next drive by Davenport and the Cardinals started at the DU 27. Tommy Scott caught a swing pass and raced 24 yards for a 17-3 lead with 6:05 left in the quarter. The final scoring drive for Saginaw Valley State happened in the third quarter. DU was stopped by fourth-and-5 at the SV 40 and two plays later it was Scott rumbling for 63 yards untouched for a 24-3 lead with 5:26 left in the third quarter.
Davenport was hindered by five turnovers (four interceptions and one fumble) and gained just 80 yards of offense (season low). SVSU gained 256 yards but were just 1-for-12 on third down.
Jalen Robinson led the defense with 13 tackles and also had a forced fumble and pass breakup.
Elysee Mbem-Bosse had 11 tackles including a seven-yard sack.
