Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Whelan's diving header in double overtime gives DU a 2-1 win at Northwood

DU matched their most GLIAC wins in a season (9) and keep pace with Parkside for first place

MIDLAND, Mich. - The tension was there in the final minutes of double overtime on Sunday as the men's soccer team needed a goal to remain in a first-place tie in the conference. During this Halloween Day matinee, the trick-or-treat theme turned into a treat for the Panthers as Matt Whelan drove home a diving header in the 107th minute for a 2-1 win at Northwood.

"We battled a good Northwood team today," said head coach Chris Hughes. "Any game in the GLIAC is going to be a challenge. We have worked this year hard on several parts of our game and one of those parts helped us secure the needed three points. It will for sure propel us forward to our next opponent. #BattleOn"

The Panthers and Timberwolves battled to a scoreless tie in the first half despite DU having a 14-7 edge in total shots including 5-1 in shots on goal. The first goal was scored by Whelan in the 65th minute on a gorgeous set of events. Klaris Kurti dished a pass to Eoin Broughan from a few yards away and Broughan did a quick back-heel pass to a cutting Whelan. He buried the ball with his left foot into the left corner for the 1-0 lead.

The Timberwolves found the equalizer in the 85th minute as Chase Clark had a long cross through the 18-yard box from the right wing. Seamus Quinn was trailing the play and got the ball with time and space just inside the box and scored inside the left post.

Within DU needing a golden goal to secure three points, Daire O'Riordan took a corner kick that Whelan charged towards and diving to his left got enough of his head on the ball to deflect it on an angle to the right and past Robert Gjelaj for the biggest goal of the season.

The final shots were 34-18 in favor of the Panthers including 16-7 in shots on goal. Shane Marinkovich made six saves in goal for the Panthers. The regular season finale is next up on Thursday, Nov. 4 as Davenport travels to third place Purdue Northwest for a 4:00 PM ET kick. DU and Parkside are currently tied for first place in the conference and the Rangers will travel to Northern Michigan on the same day for a 3:00 PM start.
