MENTOR, Ohio - On a blustery and cloudy day, the Davenport men's soccer team made their first appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Lewis University proved to be a formidable opponent and won 2-0 at Mentor High School to advance to play Lake Erie in the second round on Saturday. The Panthers end their season at 11-8-1 overall but just could not solve a tough Lewis defense that allowed just six shots.
The Panthers were winning the possession time through the first 15 minutes of the match but the Flyers broke through in the 18th minute as Jimmy Mwanga scored his sixth goal of the season. The match turned more difficult for the Panthers in the 20th minute when Matt Budreck scored his first goal of the season on a header just inside the crossbar for the 2-0 lead.
Davenport finished with six total shots in the match while Lewis had 18 shots including eight on goal.
Shane Marinkovich made six saves to tie his season high that he accomplished on two other occasions.
