CHICAGO, Ill. - The men's ACHA Division I hockey team had a chance to play in the Chicago Classic against some of the best programs in the country. The Panthers dropped games against Liberty (11-2) and Illinois (7-3) but did pick up a 6-5 overtime win against Rhode Island on Nov. 20.
After a quiet first two periods which saw Davenport lead 2-1, the teams combined for seven goals in the third period and the Rams forced overtime with a goal coming with just 1:53 left in regulation.
Nathan Nickelson had a major impact with the final two goals for the Panthers. He scored at 11:25 of the third and then notched the winning goal at 4:02 of overtime for his fifth of the season.
Alexander Rogers stopped 48 shots in net for Davenport in one of his best showings of the season.
Austin Thompson scored a pair of goals and now has 15 this season. He ranks 10th in the nation among ACHA Division I players.
