Panthers wrap up regular season versus Saginaw Valley State

Courtney McInerney, the lone senior, led the team with 10 points

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - It was the final regular season game for senior Courtney McInerney on Saturday. The Saginaw, Mich. native led the team in scoring for the second time in her career with 10 points in a 56-49 loss to Saginaw Valley State. She went 4-of-8 from the floor including 2-of-4 behind the arc and had five rebounds and one blocked shot. The Panthers were limited to 27.9 percent shooting (17-of-61) while the Cardinals shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55).

Davenport trailed 17-10 at the end of the first quarter after scoring the first four points of the game. The Cardinals scored the next eight points to lead 8-4 with 4:20 left in the quarter. The Panthers were held scoreless for the first 3:42 of the second quarter before a Mia Vandenberg fast-break layup which made the score 19-12. Maddie Barrie connected on a three-pointer with 1:17 left until halftime for the final points of the half as SVSU led 29-16.

Davenport would come out strong in the third quarter and cut the deficit to 31-28 at the 7:07 mark as Ryan Harvey hit a layup after a steal in the backcourt. The Cardinals survived the run and scored the next six points to lead 37-28 after a Tyler Scheid layup. That was the last true threat to the lead for Davenport as SVSU led 47-38 after three quarters.

Emily Lange connected on a three-pointer 16 seconds into the fourth quarter but then neither team would score until the 5:46 mark as Maddie Maloney made a triple for a 50-41 lead. The final margin of seven points was the closest the Panthers would get as Toni Grace made a three-pointer with 16 seconds left. Grace had her 17-game double digit scoring streak end with nine points. Harvey had a solid performance with eight points, seven rebounds and four steals. It was a career high for points and steals for Harvey.

The Panthers wrap up the regular season at 5-13 and will await their opponent in the upcoming GLIAC Tournament which starts March 2.
