GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University football team has waited since Nov. 16, 2019 to tee it up. The pandemic swiped out the 2020 fall season but the Panthers are excited to be able to participate this spring. The first test comes on Saturday at noon as they travel to Gannon University to battle the Golden Knights. The Golden Knights are a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and at one time was a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) from 1995-96 to 2007-08.
FIVE PLAYERS TO WATCH
- Deondre Ford (Quarterback) - Ford is a veteran signal-caller who has 10 career games under his belt as a Panther. He played in eight games in 2019 and passed for 1,124 yards and seven touchdowns. He holds the school record with 390 passing yards and a 99-yard touchdown pass against Ashland on Oct. 12, 2019.
- Jalen Robinson (Linebacker) - Robinson was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention as a sophomore and ranked second on the team with 68 tackles. He had three double-digit tackle games in 2019 including a season-high 12 at Ashland on Oct. 12, 2019.
- Kendall Sawyer (Defensive Back) - Sawyer has been a standout in the secondary and played in all 10 games in 2019. He finished with 19 tackles and had six pass breakups.
- Deshaun Lowery (Defensive Back) - Lowery, a senior with 23 career games of experience, anchors a defensive backfield for the Panthers. He was slowed by injuries in 2019 but in his last full season in 2018 had 18 tackles.
- Seth Acda (Running Back) - Acda did not play in 2019 but during the 2018 season he led the team in rushing with 581 yards and scored twice. He was also named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention.
