Panthers lose tough one at home to Purdue Northwest

DU is now 2-1 while the Pride moved to 3-0

CALEDONIA, Mich. - In an early season battle for supremacy atop the GLIAC standings, the men's soccer team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 2-1 loss to visiting Purdue Northwest on Sunday afternoon. Both teams entered 2-0 in the GLIAC in a seven-game schedule this spring and the Pride remained tied with Saginaw Valley State at 3-0.

Christian Booth scored on a breakaway in the 70th minute to break the tie and notch the game-winning goal. The Pride opened the scoring in the 12th minute as Josue Espinoza scored his first of the season on a cross from the left wing in front of the goal. Isaiah Nieves delivered the ball into a scoring window and received the assist.

Yovany Duran tied the game in the 21st minute for the Panthers. He struck from 25 yards out and breathed life into the squad. DU had six shots total in the first half compared to four by the Pride. The Panthers kept that advantage in the second half 9-5 and finished the game 15-9. However, only one shot by DU found the goal area compared to six by Purdue Northwest.

Carter Selvius made three saves in goal for the Panthers. The final chance to try and send the game into overtime came in the 89th minute as Gustav Pletscher's header went high of the goal off a corner kick. The Panthers will travel to Upper Iowa on Saturday, March 27 for a 1 PM ET kickoff against the Peacocks. Upper Iowa is currently 0-3 this season.
