GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In a revival of a cross-town rivalry, the Davenport women's tennis faced off with Cornerstone University at MVP SportsPlex on Saturday morning. The Golden Eagles had never beaten the Panthers in 12 previous meetings but that streak ended today with a 5-2 decision.
Davenport started off with a doubles win at the one spot as
Danica Malan and
Willemien Coetzee beat Alayna Bowman and Hanna De La Cruz Sanchez in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). The Golden Eagles won the other two doubles matchups dropping just two games in those matches.
Coetzee picked up one team point at one singles with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 win over Bowman. The other point came at two singles as
Isabella Carofano was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Valentina Garcia. Cornerstone would capture the remaining four singles matches in straight sets.
