MIDLAND, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team got off to a great start in the season opener at Northwood with a 4-1 win on Sunday. The teams were evenly matched in the first half but then the Panthers turned it up a notch with three goals in the second half en route to the win.
In the first half, each team had seven shots but in the final 45 minutes the Panthers outshot the Timberwolves 13-1.
Evan Marquess gave DU a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute on a shot from 35 yards out in the middle of the field. Amedeo Crovasce tied it up just over a minute later for Northwood with an assist from Sean Avery. He chipped it over
Carter Selvius on the right side of the field.
The second half was scoreless until the 70th minute when
George Deveau scored his first career goal for the game winner. Marquess had the assist on a header past Corbin Cecchini. The final goals were tallied by
Matt Whelan. The Irishman scored in the 75th minute from
Yovany Duran and
Justice Sikkema and again in the 86th minute to ice it unassisted.
Selvius made three saves in his first game as a Panther after transferring from Cedarville. Cecchini made seven saves in net for the Timberwolves. DU beat Northwood for the fifth time in the all-time series.
