UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - It just wasn't in the cards for the men's soccer team on Sunday as they fell 3-1 in the GLIAC Tournament finale against Ashland. On a hot day it was the Eagles who scored twice in the second half just minutes apart to send them into the victory circle. The fifth-seeded Eagles and sixth-seeded Panthers were the improbable pairing in the final game of the season. The Eagles beat top-seeded Saginaw Valley State on their home turf on Friday and the Panthers bested second-seeded Parkside in the second semifinal on Friday.
The Eagles jumped ahead in the 6th minute as Kieran Paterson extended his team-leading goal total to six on a shot near the 8-yard box to the right side of the net. Haruki Kimura was credited with an assist on the goal. The Panthers answered back in the 15th minute as a foul was called just inside the 18-yard box of the right side. After a slight delay, the head referee gave the Panthers a penalty kick.
Daire O'Riordan took the shot which glanced off the gloves of goalkeeper Jakob Henriksen but into the back of the net. O'Riordan along with
Evan Marquess and
Ben Cengic were named to the all-tournament team.
In the second half, the Eagles began to chip away at the Davenport back line with steady pressure. The Panthers held them off as long as they could but in the 76th minute it was Jacob Koehler scoring his second of the season off a corner kick again right near the 8-yard box. Ashland scored again just 1:06 later to ice it away as Paterson scored again on a header. Rafael Pereira assisted on both of the final two goals for the Eagles. Davenport finished 4-5-1 during the spring while Ashland went 6-4.
Carter Selvius made five saves in his final collegiate game for DU.
Ryan Zietlow,
Yovany Duran and
Brock Schultz all starters for the Panthers also played in their final contest.
