EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Davenport men's soccer team looked to be in control and on their way to the season's first win on Friday at Southern Indiana. The Screaming Eagles had other ideas as they rallied from a 3-1 deficit with nine minutes to play to force overtime and score the game-winning goal in the 94th minute. Davenport held a strong advantage throughout the game and eventually out-shot the Screaming Eagles 21-16 including a 15-6 edge in shots on goal.
The home team got on the board first though as Brian Winkler scored his first of the season from Justin Brooks in the fifth minute. The Panthers would score the next three goals including two from
Justice Sikkema. Sikkema scored in the 29th minute to tie the game. He kicked in a rebound in close after
Evan Marquess crossed the ball into the box from the left wing.
The go-ahead goal came in the 44th minute after USI had a defensive turnover and
Gustav Moeller carried the ball 10 yards. The goalkeeper for USI came way up to the top of the 18-yard box to try and cut off an angle but Moeller slipped the ball under him and into the empty net for his first goal as a Panther.
DU took a 3-1 lead in the 58th minute as Sikkema's second of the game was assisted by
Matt Whelan and
Eoin Broughan. Sikkema had a nice left-footed strike on a cross from 12 yards out. USI trailing by a pair of goals got within 3-2 in the 81st minute on a goal by Graham Miller. Less than three minutes later, off a corner kick it was Wesley Rhodes cleaning up a bouncing ball in the box to send the game into overtime. Zach Schoenstein ended it 3:27 into the extra session on a golden goal. He raced down the left wing and cut inside the 18-yard box and perfectly placed a shot in the top right corner just over the hands of DU keeper
Jacob Lee.
The Panthers completed their non-conference games at 0-3 and will look to get back on track next Friday in their home opener against St. Cloud State at 7:00 p.m.Â
