Football Weekly Preview: Panthers welcome Truman State in season opener

This will be the first meeting between the schools with Saturday's kickoff set for noon at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex

OPENING DRIVE
● Davenport and Truman State will be kicking off their 2021 seasons in a non-conference, in-region matchup.
● The Panthers are opening up at home for the first time since the 2017 season. That game also happened to be the head coaching debut for Sparky McEwen.
● Davenport is 2-2 in season openers (excluding two games played in 2020) having won their last two against Lake Erie (13-9, 2019) and Robert Morris, Ill. (44-7, 2018).
● Today's game is the first of four non-conference games for Davenport and the fifth time they have played a current member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). DU is 4-0 all-time against GLVC teams with two wins over Quincy (2016, 2018) and one each over Lindenwood (2019) and McKendree (2017).
● Davenport was picked to finish sixth in the eight-team Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Preseason Coaches' Poll with 22 points. Truman State was picked to finish third in the eight-team GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 37 points.
● The Panthers have won four straight games heading into the contest. They won their final two games of the 2019 season against Northwood (21-14) and Saginaw Valley (33-23) and then played Gannon twice during the 2020 season in the spring. DU went on the road for a 30-22 win on March 20 and returned home on April 9 for a 37-22 victory.
● The Bulldogs are receiving votes in the NCAA Division II National Preseason Poll and went 3-1 during the spring with wins over Southwest Baptist (38-20), William Jewell (34-15), and Missouri S&T (42-31). They dropped a 46-29 decision on April 24 in the GLVC Championship at Indianapolis. Truman State went 10-2 during the 2019 season.
