HUDSONVILLE, Mich. - The Panthers tangled with Grand Valley State for the fifth time this season and have now won the last three meetings after a 6-1 win on Thursday at Griff's Georgetown.
This one was probably the best game played by the Panthers during the season series as they are firing on all cylinders having won five in a row to improve to 14-7 overall.
The Lakers actually recorded more shots on goal in the contest (46-33) but goaltender
Nathan Gauthier was up to the challenge stopping 45 shots on the night. The penalty situation was pretty even as the Lakers took three minors while Davenport had four. Neither team was able to score on the power play during the game.
After a scoreless first period, Davenport started to assert themselves with three goals in the second and third periods. DU scored the first three goals of the second and captain
Nathan Nickelson notched the first two goals to increase his season total to 11. He scored at 3:54 from
Austin Melone and
Austin Thompson and again at 7:13 from
Sebastien Doucet and Thompson. Adam Hulsey got into the action at 12:52 from
Robert McLaughlin for the comfortable 3-0 lead. The Lakers got their lone goal of the night at 16:04 as Nick Sommerfield scored his fifth of the season.
Davenport put it away in the third period as Doucet scored his ninth of the season at 3:24.
Justin Turner got his first goal of the season at 4:25. Hulsey made it two goals on the night at 12:25 from
Dallas Hainley.
