TUCSON, Ariz. - The Davenport men's ACHA Division I hockey club earned a split of two games over the weekend at #16 Arizona in an early-season test for both teams.
Davenport needed a shootout but pulled out a 3-2 win on Friday. The Wildcats outshot the Panthers 42-23, but
Nathan Gauthier was up to the task in net stopping 40 shots including both attempts during the shootout. He stone-walled Dylan Walker and Tyler Shetland for Arizona.
Both teams scored a goal in the first and third periods to force overtime. Walker got Arizona on the board first at 3:44 with assists from Jesse Lowell and Brody Selman.
Cole Uzzell picked up his first goal of the early season at 8:26 for a tie at the first intermission.
In the third period, Selman at 3:48 from Walker and Ryan Fischer put the Wildcats ahead 2-1.
Kristers Klavins continued his hot start with a power play goal at 7:17 for his third goal of the season.
Robert McLaughlin and
Keelan Saworski each had an assist and it was Saworski's first point as a Panther.
After the three-on-three overtime period of five minutes, this one was going to the shootout. Klavins went first and buried it and McLaughlin followed with a marker for a 2-0 advantage in the shootout.
On Saturday, the Wildcats were hungry and built a 5-0 lead with one goal in the first and four more in the second. Lowell had a hat trick for his first three goals of the season. The last goal came at 19:05 on the power play. Davenport would score the next two goals to open the third period.
Justin Turner on the power play at 4:57 from Uzzell and
Noah Bradburn broke up the shutout.
Aidan Talsma scored his first goal of the season at 10:11 with assists from Bradburn and
Brendan Bauer.
Gauthier allowed five goals in the first two periods and was lifted for
Alexander Rogers who finished the game and made 12 saves.
