Women's Basketball Weekly Preview: Panthers start GLIAC play against LSSU and Ferris State

| By:
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport women's basketball team is carrying a three-game win streak into Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play this week and are currently 4-2 overall in 2022-23. The last time they have defeated three straight NCAA Division II opponents was Jan. 4-11, 2018 against Lake Superior State, Ferris State, and Northwood. The Panthers will travel to Lake Superior State on Thursday and Ferris State on Sunday after a four-game homestand.

Davenport 71, Northwood 70 (Nov. 22)

Senior Scout Nelson made the big plays when her team needed it the most as the Panthers snapped a nine-game losing streak to Northwood. She scored the last three points at the free throw line in the final minute and blocked the potential game-winning three-pointer as time expired. Northwood got off to a great start with 27 points in the first quarter to lead by eight. The Davenport defense tightened up over the next two quarters as the Timberwolves scored 26 points in the second and third quarters combined. The game saw 11 lead changes and six ties. Northwood led by as many as 12 points in the second quarter (34-22) at the 4:57 mark. They led 41-32 at halftime, but the Panthers came out strong in the second half and scored the first eight points to make it 41-40. Freshman Ellie Toney scored a career-high 21 points and made five three's. Toney finished 8-of-13 from the floor and also had seven rebounds. Sophomore Lillee Gustafson had her third double-double of the season and fifth of her career with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Davenport 73, Hillsdale 61 (Nov. 27)

Nelson was back at it against the Chargers in a convincing win. She scored a career-high 24 points (six more than her previous high) on 8-of-15 shooting and connected on 4-of-9 behind the arc. She also contributed four rebounds, four steals (season high), three assists and one blocked shot in 38 minutes. The Panthers concluded a four-game homestand with three straight wins. Even more impressive is that the Panthers lost 81-44 last season at Hillsdale and have now won two of three in the all-time series with the Chargers. Freshman Claire Gregwer came off the bench to record her first double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in 17 minutes. Gregwer went 6-of-8 from the floor and grabbed five of those rebounds on the offensive end. Gustafson would play 24 minutes and finish with nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
