GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In a showdown between two local teams, Aquinas College used two great stretches of hockey to defeat Davenport twice over the weekend in ACHA Division I action. On Friday, the Panthers traveled to the Saints home of Southside Ice Arena and lost 6-1. On Saturday, the Panthers hosted the Saints at Patterson Ice Center and lost 5-2.
The Saints scored the first five goals on Friday to propel them to the victory, number 17 on the season. Nicholas Stockert scored the first two goals and later added a third goal for the hat trick. He now has 10 goals on the season and all of those came at even strength. Michael Curran also added two power plays goals as the Saints scored their first five goals in the first 12:23 of the contest.
Davenport's
Zachary Currie notched his 27th goal of the season at 14:42 of the period unassisted to stop the Saints scoring streak. After no one scored in the second period, Aquinas added the game's final goal at 10:32 of the third period and David Elford put home his 11th goal of the season on the power play. The Saints ended up scoring half of their goals with the man advantage on the night. Aquinas finished with a 37-35 edge in shots on goal.
The Saturday rematch saw the Panthers get out to a 1-0 lead at 19:51 of the first period as
Nathan Nickelson scored and was assisted by
Jacob Boucha. Aquinas tied it up in the second period at 12:35 on the power play with Nick Long on the goal with assists by Brandon Schwandt and Brandon Rozema. Aquinas took a 2-1 lead at 1:40 of the period as Rozema got the power play goal. DU answered at 19:51 as
Austin Thompson got the goal with an assist from
Sebastien Doucet.
Aquinas would then score the last three goals in the third period for the three-goal outcome. Davenport just could not keep themselves out of the penalty box and the Saints made them pay. Stockert scored at 9:49 and 7:15 and finally Christian Look scored at 4:13 at even strength. Aquinas went 4-for-6 on the power play which spelled doom for the Panthers. Aquinas edged DU in shots 39-31 as
Alexander Rogers made 34 saves for Davenport.
