The men's ACHA Division I hockey team is as hot as anyone in the country right now as they upped their win streak to eight with a pair of wins over Western Michigan over the weekend. The Panthers won 6-2 in Kalamazoo on Friday and returned home for a 7-5 win on Saturday.
The Friday game was tied at 2-2 midway through the second period but DU scored the final four goals to pull away.
Zachary Currie scored twice including the game-winning goal at 14:22 of the second period on the power play from
Sebastien Doucet and
Austin Thompson. Doucet scored at 10:03 of the third period from Thompson.
Robert McLaughlin scored at 13:31 from
Adam Hulsey and
Justin Turner.
Kristers Klavins on the power play at 15:36 from Turner and
Jack Sanko finished the scoring.
Davenport outshot the Stallions, 54-25, including 20 shots on goal in the third period.
Alexander Rogers between the pipes made 23 saves for the Panthers.
On Saturday, Davenport came out firing on all cylinders with five first period goals. Currie scored twice in the frame including a power play goal at 3:51 from Thompson and
Nathan Gauthier. He scored his 26th goal of the season at 6:44 from Klavins capping off a 4-0 lead in less than seven minutes. Klavins scored the team's fifth goal at 16:37 from McLaughlin.
Western Michigan made it interesting by scoring five of the last seven goals of the game. Ryan Peters and Rafferty Chaney scored the only goals of the second period to make it 5-2. Doucet made it 6-2 at 3:50 of the third period from
Jacob Boucha. Doucet scored again at 9:40 from
Nathan Nickelson and Thompson. The Stallons scored the last two goals at 17:21 and 18:05 but DU had a big enough lead to still win by two goals.
Gauthier in net for the Panthers made 22 saves as the shots were closer with DU holding a 38-27 lead.
