SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Davenport men's tennis squad needed a win after a disappointing match yesterday at Michigan Tech. The Panthers clawed their way to a 4-3 win at Lake Superior State in the final road match of the season. The match kicked off at 9:00 AM inside the Arbuckle Student Activity Center and the Panthers improved to 16-6 overall and 2-4 in the GLIAC while LSSU is now 4-11 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Davenport captured the point in doubles with wins at one and two.
Juan-Louis van Antwerpen and
Jonathan Bulmer at one doubles cruised to a 6-1 win over Juho Kantola and Aaron Osmond.
Quintan van Wijk and
Joel Mast at two doubles had a little closer result, 6-3, over Diego Penz and Xavier Vicente Navarro.
Kantola handed van Wijk a rare singles loss at the first spot in three sets. van Wijk was playing at one singles for the second time this season and dropped the first set 6-4. He won 6-3 in the second set but ran out of gas in the third set 6-1. van Antwerpen got a big win at two singles 6-4, 7-5 over Vicente Navarro. Bulmer went the distance against Krishan Taneja of LSSU at three singles. Bulmer won 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 to clinch an important point.
Osmond at four singles for the Lakers beat Mast 6-2, 6-3.
Daniil Khitrou at five singles did not have an answer for Ali Sahibzada 6-4, 7-5.
Maxim Drinchich had one of his biggest wins of the season at six singles with scores of 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 against Penz.
