CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport women's tennis team was able to enjoy their home courts at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 win over Purdue Northwest. The team had their senior day and recognized
Vladislava Shumilova who played her final match as a Panther.
Shumilova was able to pick up her 25th career singles win and 26th career doubles win. She teamed up with
Willemien Coetzee at one doubles for a 6-3 win over Sienna Lopez and Patricia Dizon of the Pride. She played three singles against Dizon and won that match 6-1, 6-4.
Isabella Carofano and
Kumiko Yamaguchi at three doubles was also able to win 6-2 against Nicole Uzcategui and Salma Raslan to secure a point by winning two of three doubles matches.
The first two singles matches went to the Pride so the Panthers needed victories from
Louise Hosking and Yamaguchi to secure the team's victory. Hosking at four singles prevailed 6-4, 7-5 against Raslan. Yamaguchi at five singles won 6-3, 6-2 against Mar Vilanova. The Panthers did not qualify for the upcoming GLIAC Tournament by finishing seventh in the league standings. The top six teams advanced to the GLIAC Tournament. Davenport did see improvement this season going 9-17 overall and 2-6 in the conference. The nine wins are the most in a season since 2016-17 when the team went 14-11 and still competed in the NAIA.
