BYRON CENTER, Mich. - The rivalry between Davenport and Aquinas resumed on Friday night as the teams played each other for the third time this season. After splitting the first two games, the Panthers scored the last three goals in a 6-4 victory over the Saints at Southside Ice Arena.
The Panthers jumped ahead 2-0 in the first 7:12 of the contest.
Jonathan Dubbink scored at 2:57 from
Brendan Bauer and
Kristers Klavins. The second goal was scored by
Branwen Pollett on the power play from Dubbink and Klavins.
The Panthers then gave up two straight goals after taking penalties to allow the Saints to score both of those goals on the power play. Dylan Rumpke scored at 8:31 and Nicola Vogel tied the game at 19:52.
Heading into the second period tied at 2-2,
Heath Drye broke the tie at 0:17 with a quick strike assisted by
Noah Bradburn. The Saints would regain the lead at 4-3 as Austin Gilmore and Brandon Rozema scored at even strength at the 11:20 mark.
Peter Stojcevski would tie the game at 19:43 on the power play from Dubbink and
Taber Gutschick.
Davenport seized control in the third period and kept Aquinas off the board. The game-winning goal was scored at 11:03 as Dubbink got his second goal and fourth point of the game. Dubbink's tally was assisted by
Ryan Blackburn and Bauer. Klavins put it away at 19:33 from Bauer for the final score of 6-4 on an empty-net goal.
Sean Andrus got the win in goal for the Panthers and made 21 saves in the contest. Next up for DU is a clash against No. 10 Grand Valley State on Friday, Nov. 3 at 8:35 PM at Patterson Ice Center.
