Taylor Sets Career-High in Five Set Halloween Thriller vs GVSU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Lindsay Taylor set a new career-high with 29 kills on Tuesday evening at the DU Student Center as the Davenport women's volleyball team fell to Grand Valley State in five sets. Her 29 kills mark the fourth most by a Panther in a single match and put Taylor over 300 kills on the season. The graduate also added 17 digs, her 12th double-double of the season.

Despite the loss, the Panthers (11-14, 7-7 GLIAC) registered more points (77-71) and kills (65-55) than the Lakers (20-3, 12-2 GLIAC). Grand Valley State is also recieving votes in the most recent AVCA coaches poll.

Abby Welke started the first set on fire, slamming three kills to propel DU to a 6-5 advantage. After a back-and-forth set, the Lakers gained a four-point advantage, holding a 20-16 lead. The Panthers responded with a 7-0 rally, which featured four kills by Taylor, to regain the lead (23-20). GVSU put a halt to the seven-point run off a DU attack error. However, Taylor struck again on the ensuing play, and DU led the set 24-21. Davenport won on an attack error by Meghan O'Sullivan of GVSU, taking down the Lakers by a score of 25-23.

Set two was another back-and-forth affair, as the largest lead was only three points, which was held by the Panthers (10-7). However, it was the Lakers who pulled it out in the end, 26-24, with their largest lead being two points.

The back-and-forth play continued into the third set as the two teams were knotted at 16 apiece. The Lakers found some momentum, getting out to their largest lead of the set (21-17). However, Davenport dominated down the stretch with an 8-0 rally to win the set 25-21 and one set away from capturing the upset.

Davenport held a 17-15 lead late in the fourth set following a 4-0 run, which was finished off by a kill from Taylor. GVSU responded with a 10-2 run, tying the match 2-2 and taking the set 25-19.

With the match hanging in the balance in the fifth and final set, the Panthers garnered a 9-7 lead following the setter dump by Nicole Odeen, resulting in a kill. Grand Valley responded with a 7-1 rally to take a 14-10 lead. The final point of that rally was awarded on an extremely questionable red card given to DU head coach Brian Netzler, which gave GVSU a point at the most critical moment in the match. Grand Valley went on to win the set 15-12 and defeated Davenport 3-2.

Welke ended the night tying a career-high with 12 kills for the Panthers. Emma Turnquist finished with 12 kills, while Emmy Webb chipped in with five. Odeen ended with a match-high 50 assists for DU, while Kalinowski added a match-high 30 digs defensively.
