Last-minute goal puts No. 10 GVSU over Panthers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After 90 minutes of grueling play in heavy rain, the Davenport University women's soccer team fell 2-1 against No. 10 Grand Valley State University after a last-minute goal put the Lakers on top.

Madison Fant put momentum on the Panthers' side early in the match after a pass from Haley Diekevers set up Fant to score a great shot in the bottom left net, putting DU up 1-0 just inside the 10-minute marker. However, GVSU responded soon after to level the match after an unassisted, deep shot from Alli French found the back of the net to bring the score to 1-1.

This would be the final goal scored in the first 45 minutes as the only other shot-on-goal by the Lakers was saved by Gabriana Bennecke, tallying her first of four total saves in the match.

The Panthers were held to just three shot attempts in the entire second half with none being on the mark. Just as it seemed the Panthers would finish the match in their first-ever tie against GVSU in program history, the Lakers struck once more on a desperate shot attempt by Claire Breault from way outside the box slipped out of the hands of Bennecke and rolled past the goal line inside of the 87th minute.

DU's season record now falls to 4-3-3 as their third conference loss makes their GLIAC record at 1-3-3.
