Panthers drop first conference match of the season

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Davenport University men's soccer team opened conference play in a loss against Nothern Michigan on the road, 1-0.

A scoreless first half still consisted of multiple shot attempts from each side, with the Panthers tallying six and the Wildcats adding eight of their own. The match nearly finished with no scoring from either side, until a last-minute goal from Northern's Jaziel Sainz de Vilmorin was found the back of the net inside of the 86th minute off an assist by Fernando Abascal.

DU attempted to knot the scoreline with one minute remaining, but a corner kick attempt headed by Andrew Dykstra missed and went out top right of the box, ending the match with Northern protecting their home pitch.

The Panthers are now 1-2-2 and will continue their road trip at St. Cloud State University on Sunday, Sept. 17 with kick-off at 1 p.m. (12 p.m. CST).
