Panthers Stay Hot at Home Sweeping SVSU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University women's volleyball team swept Saginaw Valley State on Saturday evening at the DU Student Center, concluding a five-match homestand. The Panthers (6-11, 4-5 GLIAC) won four of the five home matches over the last two weeks, with their only loss coming to No. 4 Ferris State.

DU earned the early advantage in set one behind a 4-0 run, capped by a kill from Kaitlyn Marsh off a Mehl Hansen assist, putting the Panthers on top 6-2. It was a tightly contested set to the finish and the Cardinals (3-13, 1-7 GLIAC) took a one-point lead (22-21) late following a 4-1 rally, forcing Davenport head coach Charley Andrews to take a timeout. Out of the break,  the Panthers dominated, scoring four straight points which featured two kills from Rachel Youngblood to take down the Cards 25-22.

In the second, the Panthers dominated early to establish a comfortable 11-point edge (16-5) over the Cardinals. A big part of that was an 11-1 run, which saw three kills from Abby Alan to lead the charge for DU. The Cards pulled within seven (22-15), but Davenport finished the set with three consecutive points, capped by a service ace from Alan to seal it 25-15.

After falling behind 9-6, the Panthers put together a 7-1 rally which was sparked by a kill from Alan to go ahead 13-10 in the third set. SVSU engineered a 4-0 rally late to regain the lead (21-20) and Andrews took a pivotal timeout. Again, out of the break, Davenport came out hot, finishing off the set with a 5-1 run which concluded with a kill from Youngblood to secure the sweep following the 25-22 victory.

Alan led the way in the victory for the Panthers, recording a match-high 16 kills to go along with 11 digs while hitting .333. The sophomore has now tallied five double-doubles on the season, including three in the previous four matches.

Youngblood, Emma Turnquist and Marsh registered seven kills in the DU win. Hansen notched a match-high 35 assists, while Hayley Carr chipped in with a team-high 14 digs.
