GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -
In a dramatic matchup, the Davenport University womne's rugby team faced off against the visiting NCAA NIRA Division I Sacred Heart University in another divisional crossover for the Panthers. The highly anticipated clash did not disappoint, as both teams delivered a captivating performance that ended in a hard-fought 41-41 draw. DU's explosive start and Sacred Heart's relentless second-half comeback had fans on the edge of their seats throughout the contest.

The Panthers wasted no time establishing their offensive rhythm, storming out to an early 12-0 lead within the first 11 minutes. DU's backline demonstrated their speed and skill, with standout performances from Aubrey Crist, whose pinpoint passing created space for her teammates. Crist connected with Lionala Mayorga, whose powerful runs and well-timed offloads gained significant ground and led to early tries. The Panthers' aggressive start showcased their determination to compete against DI opponents.

However, the Pioneers were not ready to roll over. About 20 minutes in, a string of back-to-back penalties by DU gave Sacred Heart favorable field positioning, allowing them to score their first try
and cut into the deficit. The match then entered a 10-minute stalemate, with possession changing hands multiple times as both defenses held strong. The breakthrough came when Rachel Wilkie intercepted a Sacred Heart lineout overthrow, setting up a critical play. Kyla Rimpel and Jean Marie Gaines were quick to secure the breakdown, allowing the offense to reset and enabling Leilani Lepe to power through for a try. Sacred Heart answered back almost immediately, closing the gap and making it clear they were not going away.

DU responded to the Pioneers' challenge with defensive pressure that forced a knock-on from Sacred Heart. The resulting scrum allowed the Panthers to unleash their backline once again, leading to a perfectly timed offload from Lepe to Carrie Coyer-Westerberg for a blazing 29-meter run and another try. A turnover by DU after the ensuing kickoff allowed Sacred Heart to strike back just before halftime, bringing the score to 24-15 in favor of the Panthers.

The Second Half was a battle of momentum. The Pioneers came out of the halftime break with a renewed focus, leveraging their kicking game to pressure DU into a few costly mistakes. Those errors resulted in points on the board for Sacred Heart, narrowing the score to 24-22. As the game intensified, both teams entered another period where defenses reigned supreme.

DU eventually broke the deadlock when Olivia Male poached the ball from a Sacred Heart ruck, setting up a quick transition play. Crist, once again showing her vision and playmaking skills, found Coyer-Westerberg for a 43-meter try, extending the Panthers' lead to 31-22. The celebration was short-lived, as another turnover on the kickoff enabled Sacred Heart to respond swiftly, closing the gap to 31-27.

The tide appeared to be turning against DU as a series of penalties granted Sacred Heart ample time and space to mount their comeback. The Pioneers capitalized on this opportunity, scoring again to take a 34-31 lead. Sacred Heart's momentum continued as a well-placed kick into open space led to a third consecutive try, pushing their advantage to 41-31 with time running down.

Despite trailing by 10 points with 10 minutes left, the Panthers refused to back down. DU dialed up their intensity, forcing a turnover on the kickoff that quickly turned into a 22-meter run from Lionala Mayorga, who beat four defenders to score a crucial try. With only four minutes remaining, the Panthers still trailed 41-38 but were brimming with hope. A mishandled kickoff briefly gave Sacred Heart the ball, but Davenport's resilience shone through as they regained possession and began driving downfield. Alopa Nau's breakaway run brought the Panthers within striking distance, and with time ticking away, a penalty against Sacred Heart set the stage for a potential game-tying opportunity. Crist stepped up to take the penalty kick from slightly left of the posts. Her calm and confident strike sailed through, knotting the score at 41-41 and sealing a thrilling draw.
