No. 11 Drury wins twice in battle of the Panthers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's ACHA Division I hockey team had their four-game win streak against nationally-ranked teams end over the weekend as No. 11 Drury came into Patterson Ice Center and won a pair of 4-2 games. The Panthers have now played seven straight contests against nationally-ranked opponents and that will continue this upcoming week as they play twice on Thursday and Friday against current No. 5 Adrian College in Great Lakes 6 Conference action.

The Friday night 4-2 loss saw Drury with 38 shots on net compared to 31 for Davenport in a tight one throughout. The third period was ultimately the difference as Drury scored twice to break a 2-2 tie. Joe Davidson and Anmol Garcha scored for Drury in the first two periods. Ryan Blackburn tied the game at 1-1 with his fourth goal of the season at 15:55 of the first period from Kristers Klavins. Klavins then gave Davenport a 2-1 lead at 9:06 of the second period from Robert McLaughlin.

Garcha blasted home his eighth goal of the season at 2:22 of the third period for the winning tally on the only power play goal of the evening. K.T. Walters gave Drury the insurance goal at 11:30 with an assist from Francis Young-Menard. Nathan Gauthier stopped 34 shots for Davenport in net and his counterpart Jozef Kuchaslo recorded 29 saves.

Different night on Saturday but the same result of 4-2 in favor of Drury. This time it was the second period in which Drury outscored Davenport 2-0 after both teams scored once each in the first and third periods. The offense wasn't as prevalent as Drury registered 29 shots compared to 21 for Davenport.

Neither team was successful on the power play as Drury was 0-of-5 and Davenport was 0-of-4. Peter Stojcevski opened the scoring at 10:56 of the first period with his third goal of the campaign from Heath Drye. Matthew Johnston tied it up for Drury at 13:12 with his ninth goal of the season.

Luke Aston gave Drury a 2-1 lead at 6:28 of the second period and scored again at 9:05 for a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes. Stojcevski got his second goal of the game at 9:05 of the third period from Trent Benedict and Drye. Drury took advantage of an empty-net situation late in the game with 31 seconds left as Jakob Holley scored with an assist from Devin Jameson.

Kuchaslo got the start in net for Drury and stopped 7-of-8 shots before handing it over to Joshua Robins. He finished the game in net stopping 12-of-13 shots. Kyler Lowden ended up with 25 saves for Davenport between the pipes.
