Panthers battle in 12-7 loss to NMU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport University women's lacrosse went toe-to-toe with Northern Michigan University but fell in a 12-7 loss at home.

The Wildcats managed a two-goal scoring run to open the game until an unassisted goal by Blakely Malpass was scored with 7:17 remaining in the first quarter. With under 30 seconds left in the first, NMU scored on a man-down situation to take a 3-1 lead heading into the second.

DU struck early (14:02) on a man-up goal by Marisa Scola (assist Gabby Basha) who made her first career start for the Panthers. Although Maddy Haynes (assist Malpass) and Brianna Rodriguez (free-position) added two more goals to DU's count, the Wildcats matched all three scores to maintain a 6-4 advantage at the halftime break.

Momentum slowed down for both sides in the third period for the most part, as two goals by Northern were matched by a pair of goals by Haynes. However, the remaining 15 minutes of the contest was taken over by the Wildcats who went on a 4-1 scoring run to seal the victory.

An untraditional game plan saw Theadora Krueger starting as goalkeeper for the first half (three saves, six goals allowed), as Haynes led the effort with three goals (one groundball). Rodriguez added two goals, with Malpass and Scola adding one each.

The Panthers were 19 of 23 on clearances and caused four of the Wildcats' 16 total turnovers.

DU's season record fell to 5-6 overall (0-3 GLIAC) as Concordia, St. Paul is up next on Sunday, Apr. 21 at the DU Turf Field.
