Dykstra nets two goals in DU's home opener victory

CALEDONIA, Mich. - Led by junior forward Andrew Dykstra's first scores this season, Davenport University men's soccer managed a 2-1 comeback over Lake Erie College in the 2024 home opener. DU's victory improved the all-time series to 1-1 as Sept. 22 was the second-ever meeting between the programs and the first in just over five years.

Staying patient on offense was the game plan for both teams in the early portions. It wasn't until halfway into the seventh minute that DU would log the first shot attempt of the match. Three minutes later, a corner-kick opportunity for Lake Erie found Oliver Lancaster, who set up Luke Peperak for a successful header attempt to put the Storm in front, 1-0.

Nearly 15 minutes later, a deep cross by Austin Hall into the opponent's box was complimented by a cheeky header from Dykstra with his back to the goal, sending a shot into the back of the net and leveling the match at 1-1 heading into the break.

Controlling the first 12 minutes of the second half, DU held Lake Erie to zero shot attempts compared to an aggressive 10 shots by the Panthers - five of which were saved by the Storm. Determined to secure the win, Dykstra's first and only shot attempt of the half would prove effective as a well-timed cross by Cam Power gave his teammate another opportunity to send his second header into the goal - giving DU its third win this year (3-2-1 overall).

This marks the third match this year where the Panthers completed a two-goal comeback resulting in a victory as conference action begins next Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Saginaw Valley State.
