Panthers start new year with pair of losses to West Michigan teams

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The women's hockey team began the new year with a pair of games against West Michigan teams in Grand Valley State on Friday and Aquinas on Saturday. The Panthers hosted GVSU at Patterson Ice Arena falling 8-2 and then traveled to Southside Ice Arena for the 6-2 loss against the Saints. It did mark the first time since the opening series against Lawrence Tech, that DU score multiple goals in back-to-back games.

Davenport got on the board first against the Lakers at 13:32 of the first period. Kennedy Christensen scored her third goal of the season with an assist from Gabby Basha. Alison Konieczny then would score the next two goals for Grand Valley State. She wrapped the first period scoring at 15:42 and opened the second period scoring at 6:26. Ella Campbell and Paige Adams assisted on both of the goals.

Abbygail Rubsam scored on the power play at 13:36 of the second period and Anne Wayman made it 4-1 at 14:18 as Adams got her third assist of the game. Ali Hanlon stopped the scoring streak for the Panthers with her first tally of the season at 18:39 unassisted. The Lakers scored all four goals in the third period and did so in the final 3:50 of the game. Abbey McCallion, Marlee Sprott, Melanie Scram, and Kayli Sassak each had goals for the Lakers. Emily Carson stopped 15 shots for the Lakers, while Avery Hall made 52 saves for the Panthers.

Next up was Aquinas on Saturday and the Saints were able to score five goals in the last two periods to pull away for the four-goal victory. Kaeleigh Kachmarski scored her sixth goal of the season at 13:04 of the first period as the only scoring in the first 20 minutes. Christensen tied the game for Davenport at 15:40 of the second period. Kachmarski got another goal at 18:30 from Anna Castle and Reyna Dominczak scored her second goal of the season for a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Kate Kramm notched her first goal of the season on the power play for Aquinas just 20 seconds into the third period from Dominczak and Alyssa Exline. Christensen got her first multi-goal game of the season at 11:27 from Abi Courtney to trail 4-2. Castle added a goal at 15:00 and Paige Ike sealed the win at 17:50 from Castle and Dominczak, who finished with three points. Izzy Buckett made 22 saves for the Saints in net, while Hall made 24 saves for Davenport.
