DU takes down No. 12 Calvin on the road on Saturday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport men's ACHA D1 hockey picked up their second win of the season against a nationally-ranked team on Saturday night with a 5-4 overtime victory over No. 12 Calvin. The Panthers fell 4-1 on Friday night, but got the revenge on Saturday to snap a 10-game losing streak against the Knights.

Calvin was playing in their season opener on Friday at Patterson Ice Center, but looked in mid-season form building a 3-0 lead into the second period. Former Panther Trent Benedict scored twice in a short span in the second period. Krzysztof Petryla scored the game's first goal at 14:15 of the first period from Steven Ickes. Ickes also assisted on Benedict's first goal. Benedict's second goal on the power play was unassisted.

Liam Bland netted his first goal of the season at 15:37 of the second period with assists from Ryan Blackburn and Dylan Jouppi. Ickes notched his third point of the night with a goal at 18:45 of the third period. Davenport would finish with more shots on goal (27-22) and Kyler Lowden stopped 18 shots in net for DU.

Fast forward to Saturday, and the Panthers won a thriller 5-4 in overtime and Luke Mikkola wristed a shot home just 27 seconds into the extra session. Brendan Bauer scored twice for the Panthers on the power play. Jake Alton and Taber Gutschick each had two assists. Ryder McMillen got the first goal for Davenport at 3:11 of the second period as Alton and Blackburn had the assists.

Blackburn scored the team's fourth goal at 5:13 of the third period. Tony Eaton led the Calvin charge with two goals and one assist. The Knights led 2-0 after the first period, before the Panthers staged a comeback. It was 2-2 after the second period and each team scored twice in the third period to force overtime. 

The Panthers (3-5) will be taking on GL6 opponent Purdue Northwest next weekend. Friday's game will be in Hammond, Indiana and Saturday's 6:30 start will be at Patterson Ice Center.
