CALEDONIA, Mich. — Charlie Davis stole the show Friday night, scoring twice and assisting another as Davenport University downed Northern Michigan University, 3-1, at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The Panthers' offense was fueled by a dominant first-half surge, netting all three goals before halftime. Despite being outshot 19-15, Davenport's goalkeeper delivered seven key saves to preserve the lead.
Davenport capitalized early with Davis finding the back of the net in the 7th minute, setting the tone for the match. The true freshman continued to impress, notching his second goal and an assist to showcase both skill and poise on the field. Despite Northern Michigan's aggressive attack, including seven shots by Luca Rosen, the visitors couldn't convert, with Beau Hudd standing tall in goal. The Panthers extended their advantage to 3-0 by halftime when Dugan Black scored in the 42nd minute, sealing a decisive lead.
Davenport maintained a defensive stance in the second half, as Hudd made several critical stops against the Wildcats' press — including a highlight save against Teun Van Gansewinkel in the 49th minute. Northern Michigan's Triston Nelson finally broke through with a goal in the 80th minute, assisted by Max Rebori, but Davenport held strong to close out the 3-1 victory.
Asaf Kristal finished with six saves for Northern Michigan, facing 15 shots and conceding three goals. Rosen led the Wildcats' offense with nine shots, four on target, while Nelson and Rebori contributed a goal and assist, respectively.
For Davenport, Hudd anchored the defense with seven saves in 90 minutes of action. Davis recorded five points (two goals, one assist) to headline the attack, while Easton Lopez and Black each added to the offensive production.
Highlighting Davis's contribution to Davenport's victory, Head Coach Chris Hughes remarked, "His performance was where it needed to be. We're starting to get some of our players back, which is important. We added Henry Lopez back on, who hasn't played all season for the most part, and it changed the whole dynamic of our team. It made Charlie that much better today. I think Charlie would also say it wasn't just him; it was the other nine or ten boys right around him, and that made him a better player today. He capitalized when he needed to, and that's what leaders do."
Looking ahead, Davenport will host Parkside on Sunday, Oct. 19, with kickoff set for 11 a.m. in Caledonia, Mich.
