CALEDONIA, Mich. — A hard-fought Senior Day battle ended in a 1-0 loss for Davenport University against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The matchup carried extra emotion as the Panthers honored their seniors before kickoff. Wisconsin-Parkside netted the lone goal late in the first half and held off Davenport's push to equalize in the final 45 minutes.
Davenport's goalkeeper
Bailey Gauthier opened the match with several key saves to keep things level early, denying attempts from Wisconsin-Parkside's Emily Giese and Emily Mikkelson. Despite the Panthers' defensive resilience, the Rangers kept the pressure on and eventually broke through in the 45th minute when Giese, assisted by Kate Brown, found the back of the net.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Davenport looked to regroup and mount a comeback in the second half.
Elizabeth Wolter took over in goal and made an immediate impact, stopping a close-range effort from Mikkelson in the 49th minute and another from Uda Kimba in the 63rd to keep the Panthers within reach.
Offensively, Davenport generated several promising chances.
Megan Malek fired just wide in the 60th minute, while
Madelyn Schamanek forced a save from Rangers' goalkeeper Tristen Cross late in the match. Despite the late push, the Panthers couldn't find the equalizer as Wisconsin-Parkside held on for the narrow 1-0 victory.
Gauthier finished her 45 minutes in net with four saves while conceding one goal, and Wolter added three saves without allowing any. Schamanek and
Josie Wilcox each recorded a shot to lead Davenport's attack. For Wisconsin-Parkside, Giese tallied the game-winning goal with Brown providing the assist, and Cross secured the shutout with one save. Mikkelson paced the Rangers' offense with seven total shots, including four on target.
