GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's ACHA Division I hockey team split a pair of games over the weekend against No. 17 Indiana Tech. The Warriors won their season opener 2-1 on home ice on Friday and then the Panthers improved to 2-0 on their home ice with a 4-1 victory on Saturday at Patterson Ice Center.
Solid defense and goaltending kept the game close on Friday. Each team had a penalty in the first period and the game increased in physicality over the final two periods. There were five penalties in each of the second and third periods and both teams went 1-for-4 on the power play.
Jeremy Dunmore scored the game's first goal on the power play at 19:13 of the first period with assists from Ian Vannelli and Mason Bazaluk. The Warriors added to their lead at 12:11 of the second period as Francesco Santaniello got the goal from Malik Ali. DU cut the deficit in half 51 seconds into the third period as
Jack Kelly scored his first of the season on the power play from
Peter Stojcevski and
Ryder McMillen.
Kyler Lowden stopped 37 shots in net for Davenport and Gage Reimer stopped 32 shots for Indiana Tech.
Davenport put together a complete effort in the Saturday tilt for their second win of the season. DU was able to score in each period and spotted the Warriors the first goal before scoring the final four goals of the game. Ryan Doucette opened the scoring at 6:38 of the first period from Pavel Svoboda.
Simon Davidson tied the game at 8:09 of the first with his first goal of the season from
Logan Martinelli and Anthony Kauffman. It was that trio's first points of the season.
Stojcevski needed just 37 seconds into the second period to score the game-winning goal on the power play from McMillen and
Dylan Jouppi. Martinelli had his second point of the game and his first goal of the season at 17:58 from Davidson and
Bryan Fenlon. McMillen concluded the scoring at 14:22 of the third period with his first goal of the season from Stojcevski and Jouppi.
DU went 6-for-6 on the penalty kill and Lowden made 26 saves between the pipes. Reimer ended with 25 saves and allowed all four goals. The next test will come against No. 11 Calvin on Friday, Oct. 10 at 8 PM from Patterson Ice Center.
