DU PSYCHED FOR LONG-AWAITED HOME OPENER

Kickoff for homecoming against Michigan Tech is 2 PM

10/9/2025 3:08:00 PM

●    The Davenport football team will be stepping onto their home turf for the first time this season on Saturday in a GLIAC contest against Michigan Tech. The first five weeks saw four road games and a home game canceled, so the Panthers are primed and ready for a homecoming showdown against the Huskies. Davenport is a perfect 8-0 in their homecoming games, but will face their toughest test to date against a 4-1 squad in MTU. DU is coming off a 37-14 loss at previously No. 10 Grand Valley State. The Panthers continued their strong running game by accounting for 193 yards on the ground, which was the highest total in the series against the Lakers. Kayden Collins scored his first touchdown as a Panther on a 10-yard run on the opening drive. GVSU scored the next 21 points until D'Wan Mathis found Earnest Sanders on a 75-yard touchdown, which is the longest pass play of the season for DU. GVSU would shut out the Panthers in the second half and got two rushing scores by Brady Drogosh, plus a safety in the third quarter.
●    Collins led the team in rushing for the first time this season with a season-high 89 yards on 11 carries. Cephus Harris carried the ball 16 times for 53 yards, but didn't find the end zone for the first time this season. The passing game was sputtering as Mathis (3-7) and Mac VandenHout (1-11) combined for 4-of-19 for 109 yards. DU's quarterbacks were also sacked three times after coming into the game having been sacked three times in three previous games. D'Angelo Bellamy had a season-high nine tackles after coming into the game with 10 through three games. Nick Pulley had a season-high six tackles, while Jamar Mills also had six tackles and a pass breakup. Mills is currently second on the team with 30 tackles this season. Alec Wojahn had a superb punting day with a career-best 51.5 average on four attempts and pinned one inside the 20-yard line. The Panthers continue to protect the ball through four games and are seventh nationally in turnovers lost (3) and 17th in turnover margin (1.0).
●    Michigan Tech has emerged as a threat in the GLIAC under the tutelage of Dan Mettlach. The Huskies are off to a 4-1 start for the second straight year and it has been the best start overall since going 5-0 to begin the 2015 season. The current campaign began on Aug. 28 with a 37-17 win over then No. 16 Bemidji State at home. They also picked up non-conference wins over South Dakota Mines (45-9) and Hillsdale (34-21), before their first loss coming on Sept. 20 at home against Upper Iowa (21-14). MTU rebounded last week with a GLIAC-opening 48-24 win at Wayne State. The Huskies put up 38 first-half points and shut out the Warriors in the second half. Alex Bueno has been one of the conference's finest signal-callers and went 18-of-28 through the air for 236 yards and four touchdowns. He targeted Nic Nora for five catches totaling 96 yards and two scores. Kolby Hindenach carried 15 times for 84 yards, as Michigan Tech totaled 188 yards on the ground. Chase Koch had five tackles and a 10-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter. MTU is currently third in the GLIAC averaging 402 offensive yards per game.
●    The Panthers lead the all-time series by a 4-3 margin and have won the last three meetings against Michigan Tech. It will be DU's first home game against the Huskies since 2022 and they have outscored them 104-58 in the current three-game win streak. The teams have played five times in Houghton with the Panthers holding a 3-2 edge in those games. Davenport prevailed 24-20 in last year's clash on Oct. 12 at Sherman Field. Antjuan Collins had a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter after a Jake Rueff 12-yard touchdown run on MTU's first possession. D'Wan Mathis had a pair of touchdown passes to Collins from 51 yards in the second quarter and to Preston Smith from 28 yards in the third quarter. Drew Collins scored on a three-yard run early in the fourth quarter to make it 21-20. DU answered on their next drive with a 31-yard field goal by Brandon Gielow for the 24-20 final outcome.
