UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — The Davenport men's soccer team saw its season come to a close on Friday, falling 3–1 to Saginaw Valley State in the GLIAC Semifinals at Robert C. Braddock Field. The Panthers generated seven shots on goal and showed late resilience, but two first-half strikes from the Cardinals created a gap DU couldn't overcome.
Saginaw Valley opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Eoin Farrell converted a penalty kick after a Davenport foul by Ryan Sheffer in the box. The Cardinals continued to apply pressure, earning eight corner kicks and extending the lead to 2–0 in the 36th minute with a goal from Lui Ingavi. Davenport produced opportunities of its own, forcing SVSU goalkeeper Nick Kay into three first-half saves, but entered the break down two.
The Cardinals added to their advantage in the 64th minute as Farrell assisted Matty Telfer to make it 3–0. Davenport responded with intensity late in the match, pulling one back in the 80th minute when Payton Wright finished a pass from Drew Matyunas to cut the deficit to 3–1. Despite continued pressure in the final minutes, the Panthers were unable to break through again as Saginaw Valley secured its spot in the GLIAC Championship.
Beau Hudd recorded five saves while facing 22 total shots. Offensively, Wright finished with one goal on two attempts, Charlie Davis registered three shots with two on target, and Matyunas added an assist and one shot.
For Saginaw Valley, Farrell tallied a goal and an assist, Kay posted six saves and added an assist, while Telfer and Ingavi each contributed goals in the win.
