First-half explosion not enough in Panthers' loss to Mountain Lions

COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. - Davenport University women's lacrosse strong performance as a team fell short of a victory as the Panthers lost 18-13 to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS).

Free-position goals by each team (Blakey Malpass, 10:37) within the first five minutes saw the score even at 1-1, but a 4-0 scoring run by the Mountain Lions gave the opponent a four-point lead. An entirely different offense broke out in the second period as an 8-4 run by DU led to the game being tied at 9 goals apiece at halftime.

Sparked by Mika Kulynych at the 14:00 mark, goals by Brianna Rodgriguez (free-position), Rodriguez, Jenna Gillis (assist Kulynych), Malpass (free-position), Theadora Krueger (assist Malpass), Malpass, and Kuylynch (assist Malpass) created an opportunity for DU to steal the road win.

However, a 5-0 run by UCCS to open the second half was eventually snapped by Alyssa Bird for the Panthers' only goal in the third period. DU came within two goals (14-12) as two unanswered scores by Malpass brought the senior midfielder's total to five for the day - tying her career-high for single-game goals to officially join the 100 goals club.

Another goal by Krueger (free-position) with 10:23 left to play would be the last for the Panthers as another scoring run by the Mountain Lions sealed the win.

Defensively, Ashley Sanders and Jenna Jenkins raked in four ground balls, followed by three from Kulynych and two by Haynes, Gillis, and Gabby Basha. Zoe Cassell saw the most action in goal with four saves, as Rachel Livak made her collegiate debut with one save in the effort.

DU continues its Colorado trip on Thursday, Feb. 27, at Colorado State-Pueblo with a 3 p.m. EST opening draw against the Thunderwolves.
