Historic NCAA Championships for swimming and diving teams

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - This past week was a big one for Davenport Swimming and Diving as they went to compete at the NCAA Division II Nationals. DU had nine people compete, with seven swimmers: Owen Stender, Micah Sholl, Mallory Brownrigg, Asyia Shank, Nadia Jastrzabek, Alicja Pinkowicz, and Ella Wagner. DU also had two divers, Matthew Gauck and Robby Russo, and two alternates, Claire Dekievit and Mikayla Reimink.

Matthew and Robby both dove in the pre-qualification rounds of diving, where Matthew made it back to compete in both 1 and 3-meter events.  Matthew dove the 3-meter, 11 dives on day two, where he placed seventh overall to set a school record of 478.85 points, and was named an All-American. He made DU history being the first male diver to make it top eight at nationals. Gauck also dove on day four doing the 1-meter, 11 dives event placing 18th with a score of 375.55 points.

On the first day of nationals, Ella Wagner and Nadia Jastrzabek swam their individual events. Ella swam the 200 IM where she finished with a time of 2:04.39 and placed 22nd. Nadia swam the 50 free with a time of 23.30 and placed 19th overall. The women's 200 medley relay also swam during the night session of day one which consisted of Alicja doing the backstroke, Asyia doing the fly, Mallory doing the breaststroke and Nadia finishing it with the freestyle. The relay swam a time of 1:42.90 and placed 16th, which made it the first relay in DU history to compete and score at nationals and become the second team of All-American swimmers.

On day two, Alicja swam the 100-meter freestyle, finishing with a time of 55.41 and placing 19th overall.

On day three, DU had four individual swimmers compete. Alicja swam the 100 back with a time of 56.87 and placed 36th. Nadia swam the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.61 and placed 34th. Micah swam the 100 breast as well with a time of 53.94 and placed 17th. Lastly, Owen swam the 100 breast, too, with a time of 54.13, and placed 21st to end day three of nationals.

On the final day, we had Nadia, Alicja, Ella, and Owen swim their individual events. Nadia swam the 100 free with a time of 50.82 and placed 27th. Alicja swam the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.13 and placed 24th. Ella swam the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.70 and placed 29th. Owen also swam the 200 breaststroke and went a time of 1:56.89, almost breaking his school record and placing sixth to make it back to finals in the "A" heat. In finals, Owen finished with a time of 1:57.10 and placed seventh, making him an All-American for the second time.

The men's team finished the meet scoring 24 points and placing 25th overall, while the women scored two points and placed 38th overall.
