WLAX Preview: One game this week as Panthers travel to No. 23 GVSU on Friday

| By:
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The regular season is starting to wind down and the women's lacrosse team has just one game this week. The Panthers will travel to No. 23 Grand Valley State on Friday for a 7:00 PM matchup in Allendale. The Panthers will look to have a better showing this time around after a 12-3 loss to the Lakers back on Apr. 3 in Grand Rapids. The team is coming off one of their best wins of the season last Sunday as they defeated Northern Michigan 11-9 on Senior Day at the DU Turf Field. That win put them at 2-4 in the GLIAC and currently in a third-place tie with NMU. Concordia-St. Paul is second at 4-2 and the Lakers are atop the standings at 6-0.

Last week was a tough 13-12 loss against Concordia-St. Paul as the Golden Bears swept the season series. Davenport led 11-9 with 9:28 left in the game when CSP scored four straight goals to take a 13-11 lead. Susie Monson scored three of those goals and Anna Fisher had a man-up goal in that stretch. Jenna Gillis scored with 35 seconds left to get within a goal, but a late turnover after winning the draw control ended the hopes of sending the game to overtime. Maddy Haynes led the team with four goals and four points. Theadora Krueger added three goals, four ground balls, and four caused turnovers.

During the Northern Michigan game on Sunday, the Panthers took a 11-6 lead with 4:20 remaining in the game after a Blakely Malpass goal. Josie Lakosky was single-handedly keeping her team in the game with three straight goals to end the game, but it was not enough as DU ended a five-game losing streak against the Wildcats. Haynes had a goal and assist and currently sits at 99 career goals. Malpass led the team with four goals and she currently ranks ninth in school history with 127 career goals. Krueger added two goals, four ground balls, and five caused turnovers. She was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday. The senior totaled nine caused turnovers and eight ground balls between two contests. In the 11-9 victory over Northern Michigan on Sunday, she tied the all-time DU record with 90 caused turnovers. She ranks seventh all-time at DU with 120 draw controls and ninth with 131 ground balls. Krueger currently leads the GLIAC with 2.23 caused turnovers per game. Malpass is first in the GLIAC and eighth in Division II in free-position percentage at .733.

Grand Valley State is 11-3 overall and have won 41 straight regular-season GLIAC games dating back to Mar. 24, 2019 in a 13-7 setback against UIndy on the road. The Lakers won twice last weekend defeating Northern Michigan 11-4 and then won 10-5 against Concordia-St. Paul. They have clinched at least a share of the GLIAC regular season title for the 12th time in program history. The team ranks in the top 10 nationally in multiple statistical categories, including third in save percentage (.528) and eighth in scoring defense (7.86). Goalkeeper Kaylyn Cater recorded her 200th career save in the first meeting between DU and GVSU. Zoe Ziegler scored four times in that game. Ziegler ranks fifth in the GLIAC with 30 goals this season. Ashleigh Rothe leads the team and is third in the conference with 38 goals. Rothe is also second in the GLIAC with 58 points.
