Davenport Finds Its Rhythm, Breaks Through With 3-1 Win

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Davenport University defeated Michigan Technological University 3-1 on Friday at Kearly Stadium. Davenport scored twice in the first half, setting the pace for the match. Michigan Tech managed a goal in the first half but could not find the net again. Davenport's defense held strong in the second half, allowing only four shots on goal.
 
Davenport overcame an early deficit to lead 2-1 at the close of the first half against Michigan Tech. After Michigan Tech's Bella Vasoli opened the scoring in the 17th minute, Davenport responded with a goal from Sofia Capoccia in the 21st minute, assisted by Ella Chatfield and Megan Malek. This marked Capoccia's second collegiate goal, making her the team's leading scorer. Jordan Kerns then put the team ahead in the 27th minute, assisted by Josie Wilcox, with Kerns scoring her first collegiate goal as a true freshman. Davenport's aggressive approach resulted in three corner kicks and 10 fouls, while Michigan Tech was held scoreless despite six shots.
 
The first half began with Davenport pressing forward aggressively, creating several early opportunities. Chatfield's shot in the 10th minute hit the woodwork, signaling the team's attacking intent. Michigan Tech responded with a goal from Vasoli in the 17th minute, assisted by Olivia Gette, giving them an initial lead.
 
Davenport quickly countered, equalizing in the 21st minute through Capoccia, with assists from Chatfield and Malek. Momentum shifted further in Davenport's favor when Kerns scored in the 27th minute, assisted by Wilcox, to give them a 2-1 lead. The period concluded with Davenport holding onto the lead, as they entered halftime ahead by one goal.
 
The second half began with Davenport leading 2-1 and quickly asserting control. Elizabeth Wolter made an early save at 46:43, maintaining the advantage. Davenport increased the pressure with several shots, including attempts from Madison Fant and Kerns, but it was Chatfield who extended the lead to 3-1 with a goal assisted by Wilcox and Kerns at 67:05. Wilcox's two assists on the day now make her the team's leader in assists.
 
Davenport capitalized on a persistent offensive push in the second half, highlighted by Chatfield's decisive goal in the 67th minute, assisted by Wilcox and Kerns. Despite Michigan Tech's attempts, including multiple shots by Peyton Wetzel and Gette, Davenport's defense held firm, maintaining their lead. The visiting side maintained pressure with several shots on target and two corner kicks, closing the half with a 3-1 advantage over Michigan Tech.
