Davenport Earns Road Draw After Back-and-Forth Battle

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Davenport men's soccer battled to a 3-3 draw against St. Cloud State on Sunday, answering each of the Huskies' first-half goals before taking the lead midway through the second half. The Panthers continued to fight after St. Cloud State found an equalizer, withstanding a late push to secure a point on the road.

St. Cloud State struck first in the fifth minute, but Davenport wasted little time responding. Alexis Rivera-Velasquez scored his first collegiate goal in the 10th minute, finishing a chance created by Archie Oliver to bring the Panthers level. The Huskies regained the advantage in the 24th minute, putting Davenport in a familiar position of having to respond. Once again, the Panthers found an answer, as Jordy Rodriguez scored his first goal of the season just a minute later off a pass from Charlie Davis to even the match at 2-2.

The back-and-forth continued after halftime, with Davenport looking to turn its response into a lead. In the 57th minute, Davis delivered his second assist of the afternoon, setting up Drew Matyunas for his first goal of the season. The connection put the Panthers ahead 3-2 and capped a stretch in which Davenport answered St. Cloud State's scoring with goals of its own.

The Huskies pulled even again in the 71st minute, shifting the focus to Davenport's ability to withstand the pressure down the stretch. St. Cloud State continued to push forward, recording six shots in the second half, but the Panthers stayed organized defensively. McGowan made four saves after the break, including during a late stretch in which the Huskies generated eight attacking actions between 76:36 and 88:07. Davenport held firm through the closing minutes to finish with the 3-3 draw.

Davis played a key role in the Panthers' attack with two assists, while Rivera-Velasquez, Rodriguez and Matyunas each found the back of the net. Davenport put all eight of its shots on target, forcing St. Cloud State's goalkeepers to make five saves. McGowan also finished with five saves across 90 minutes in goal.

Davenport returns home Friday, Oct. 16, to host Purdue Northwest at 2 p.m. in Caledonia, Michigan. The matchup marks the first of three consecutive home games for the Panthers as they look to build momentum in the coming weeks.
