Davenport Holds No. 14 Cardinals to Draw Despite Numerical Edge

CALEDONIA, Mich. — Davenport battled No. 14 Saginaw Valley State to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday, responding twice to erase deficits against one of the nation's top teams. The Panthers played with a one-player advantage for the final 71 minutes after the Cardinals received a red card at 18:51, but Saginaw Valley continued to threaten despite being down a player. Davenport's two goals marked its first time scoring multiple times against the Cardinals since 2023.

Saginaw Valley struck first at 6:31, before an own goal credited to the Cardinals brought Davenport level. The tie was short-lived, as Kai Forsyth put SVSU back in front at 15:14. The Panthers looked for another response before halftime, with Henry Lopez forcing a save and Ethan Engle sending an attempt wide. Carter McGowan made two first-half saves to keep Davenport within reach heading into the break, trailing 2-1.

Davenport found its second equalizer at 53:12 when Kevin Hubbell found the back of the net to make it 2-2. With the score level, McGowan came up with important stops in the 66th and 81st minutes as the Cardinals continued searching for a go-ahead goal.

Despite playing with 10 men for most of the match, Saginaw Valley continued to pressure the Panthers late. The Cardinals finished with 20 shots, including eight on target, compared to Davenport's 11 shots and two on target. SVSU also earned seven second-half corner kicks and recorded seven attacking actions between 77:56 and 88:22, but Davenport kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard to preserve the draw.

Hubbell recorded a season-high four shots, including one on target, while McGowan played all 90 minutes and finished with six saves.

Up next, Davenport closes out the regular season Friday, Oct. 23, traveling to Marquette, Michigan, to face Northern Michigan at noon.
