BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Davenport women's soccer rallied in the second half to earn a 2-1 road victory over Ferris State on Friday, getting a goal and an assist from
Natalie Vance and the game-winning goal from
Isabella Workman. Despite being outshot 19-5, the Panthers made the most of their opportunities in front of goal, while
Elizabeth Wolter delivered eight saves to help secure the win.
Ferris State controlled much of the first half, holding a 9-2 advantage in shots and earning four corner kicks to Davenport's one. However, the Panthers remained organized defensively, with Wolter making two saves to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard. Workman provided Davenport's offensive opportunities in the opening half, putting both of her shots on target as the teams entered the break in a scoreless tie.
Davenport found its breakthrough in the 57th minute when Vance finished a pass from Laney Carlson at 56:29 to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The Panthers continued to capitalize on their limited opportunities, as Vance turned playmaker in the 82nd minute, setting up Workman at 81:29 for the eventual game-winning goal and a 2-0 advantage.
Ferris State continued to put pressure on the Davenport defense, outshooting the Panthers 10-3 in the second half and putting seven attempts on goal. The Bulldogs cut into the deficit at 84:21 when Katherine Welch scored off an assist from Jadyn Glover, making it 2-1 with less than six minutes remaining. Wolter stood firm between the posts, making six second-half saves as the Panthers held off the Bulldogs' late push to secure the road victory.
Vance recorded a goal and an assist, scoring her second goal of the season and finding the scoresheet for the second consecutive game. Workman led the Panthers with three shots, all on target, and netted her third goal of the season, while Carlson added an assist. Wolter played all 90 minutes and finished with eight saves.
Davenport will look to build on its road victory over Ferris State when it travels to University Center, Mich., to face Saginaw Valley State in GLIAC action on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m.
