GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport University is pleased to announce the expansion of its athletic programs with the addition of Women's Flag Football, recently recognized by the NCAA as an emerging sport at the 2026 NCAA Convention.
"I am excited to announce the launch of Women's Flag Football at Davenport University," said Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Paul Lowden. "As one of the fastest-growing sports across youth, high school, and collegiate levels, women's flag football is a natural addition to our athletic offerings. We are proud to expand opportunities for student-athletes to compete at a high level while continuing to excel both academically and athletically."
Women's Flag Football has been surging in popularity, fueled in part by strong backing from the National Football League. More than 65 NCAA institutions currently sponsor the sport at either the club or varsity level, and that number is expected to continue rising through 2026.
The sport will also gain global visibility as it is set to debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. With youth participation on the rise and strong backing from professional leagues and governing bodies, the collegiate game serves as a critical bridge between high school competition and international play.
Davenport will begin competition in Spring 2027. Women's Flag Football is a 7-on-7 sport played on a 40-yard-by-80-yard field. The collegiate flag football season runs from February through May.
An appointment of a head coach will be announced in the upcoming weeks. Student-athletes interested in joining the inaugural program are encouraged to complete the recruiting questionnaire here: https://questionnaires.armssoftware.com/a1bcd5ca9aa4.
